Autism EEGs Show Abnormal Neuronal Connections in Cortex

The BBC has reported that research has been presented to the Society for Neuroscience from the University of Washington concerning the correlation between abnormal neuronal connections in the cerebral cortex and adults with autism. Researchers analysed EEG scans of the cerebral cortex of adults...

Gene for Normal Development of Cortex Has Reduced Activity in Dyslexia

The BBC has reported that Oxford scientists have shown on average, out of 6,000 7-9yr olds, those who carried a common genetic variant of KIAA0319 performed poor on tests for reading ability. It has previously been shown that this genetic variant is linked to a reduced activity of KIAA0319 gene....

Unique Human DNA Thought To Have Role In Cortex Development

Scientists from the University of California have found gene HAR1, active in Cajal Retzius neurons, is expressed during early embryonic development at the same time that protein reelin is active. Reelin guides the growth and connections of neurons. Although evidence is not conclusive, the...

Welcome

The cerebral cortex comprises of most of the visible surface of the brain and makes up 77% of total brain volume in humans. As this site will help to explain; specific areas of the cortex, and their associated connections, have vitally important functions in our day-to-day lives such as speech, perception and motor control. This indicates at it's complex nature and supports the fact that it is the most developed part of the brain.
